According to University of Virginia research, more people relocated to tiny U.S. cities and towns (those with fewer than 250,000 residents) in 2023 than to larger cities.
Michael Sasso writes in Bloomberg CityLab that a major factor contributing to the growth is the continued popularity of remote work.
There was a 291,400 increase in towns with fewer than 25,000 residents. Since at least the 1970s, this is the first time that small towns have seen population growth.

Texas witnessed the most population growth in the US in 2021, while California and Illinois saw the worst declines, according to an index comparing inbound and outgoing moving truck rentals.
Losers In Population
According to the Census Bureau, California’s population decreased to less than 39 million as of July after seeing a greater net domestic migration loss this year than last. As a percentage of the population, only New York has had a larger decline.
