Victim Speaks Out Indianapolis Woman Shot by Husband, Police Involved

INDIANAPOLIS –

The victim of a shooting on Indianapolis’ northwest side claimed that her husband, the suspect, attempted to shoot her in the head but the gun jammed.

At approximately 3 p.m., Charminca informed 13News reporter Chase Houle that she was leaving an office building on Wesleyan Road, which is close to North Michigan Road and West 86th Street. Elijah Radford, her 45-year-old spouse, surprised her on Tuesday, June 25 with a weapon.

Radford, she claimed, shot her in the hand.

Charminca claimed that when she was running back inside for assistance, he knocked her down and put a gun to her head. However, the gun jammed when he pressed the trigger.

She stood up to run inside, but her palm slid from the blood, making it impossible for her to pry open the door. She claimed that at that point, he grabbed her, brought her to the ground, and again pointed the gun at her head.

The gun clip fell out this time.

The shooting that took place in the 9000 block of Wesleyan Road on June 25, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m. is being looked into by IMPD.

Witnesses told responding authorities that a maroon Dodge Ram might be a suspect car. Officers pursued the truck after they saw it.

The 8000 block of Maple Leaf Lane, close to Castleton Square Mall and Interstate 69, is where the chase came to a conclusion.

Bailey claims that after stopping the truck in a patch of grass, Radford ran into an apartment. Police stated that after entering, Radford threatened a woman with a knife. Despite authorities’ repeated orders, he allegedly refused to put down the knife.

Radford was hit by gunfire from an IMPD officer and a Lawrence Police Department officer. At the scene, he passed away.

After being examined at the scene, the woman who was being held at knifepoint did not sustain any injuries.

According to an IMPD spokesman, investigators discovered a knife close to Radford at the second site and a rifle at the first.

The 8400 block of Maple Leaf Road saw an officer-involved shooting on June 25, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m. The incident is being investigated by the IMPD.

Radford is accused of attacking his wife a little more than two weeks ago, according to court filings. According to the documents, Charminca was thrown to the ground by Radford after he grabbed her by the neck.

Radford was later charged by police with strangling, domestic abuse, and battery inflicting bodily damage.

Chief legal counsel for the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Kerry Hyatt Bennett stated, “In short, nonfatal strangulation is the best predictor of future domestic homicides.”

In addition to having an arrest warrant issued for him following that incident, Radford also had a court order prohibiting him from contacting Charminca.

According to what I understand, he was placed under a seven-day hold after the prosecutor requested a bond modification due to his history of domestic abuse. He was not arrested based on the warrant. Thus, he would have spent the foreseeable future behind bars if that warrant had been executed before this awful event, according to Bennett.

Houle investigated Radford’s warrant and discovered that it was related to another domestic incident from 2019 involving a different woman.

According to the court records, Radford is accused of hitting a woman four times with a hammer.

Their relationship had only lasted for two weeks.

“The fact that we are seeing repeat offenders is not surprising. They won’t be in a position to locate new victims if the system begins to hold them accountable, according to Bennett.

As per protocol, the policemen who opened fire on Radford have been placed on administrative leave while internal investigations are conducted.

The incident involved officers from the Indiana State Police, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the Lawrence Police, and the IMPD.

It is suggested that anyone with information regarding the event get in touch with Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS or IMPD Det. Sergeant Erika Jones at the homicide bureau by calling 317-327-3475.
