Alabama Auctioneer Closes Sale on Property Linked to Alex Murdaugh Tragedy for $1 Million

The $1 million property that the Murdaugh family owned, near the scene of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh’s murders, is going to be converted into a horse farm.

According to multiple news agencies, J.P. King Co., an Alabama-based auctioneer, declined to disclose the buyer’s identity but stated they were from out of state with commercial interests in South Carolina.

The Murdaughs had about 1,700 acres total, of which the mansion and 21 acres were part of. For $3.9 million, the entire property was sold the previous year.

The entire property was purchased by Jeff Godley and James Ayer, who stated in a press statement that they only wanted to use the larger tract for farming, hunting, and logging, and that’s why they wanted to sell the house and the 21 acres.

I live next door to you; our house is located approximately a mile away from yours. In the statement, Godley stated, “We are looking for a new neighbor to enjoy this gorgeous house and land.”

In June 2021, it was discovered that Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and her son Paul, 22, had been shot and killed close to the dog kennels on the property. Alex Murdaugh, their father and husband, was found guilty of their murders and is currently serving two life sentences. The dog kennels were not included in the home’s sale.

“This secluded haven offers tranquility and privacy, making it an ideal setting for various pursuits, from a family residence or hobby farm to an equestrian haven or a peaceful weekend retreat,” J.P. King said in his description of the property.

The home was characterized as having “traditional style and classic Southern elegance.” It is 5,275 square feet, with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The $1.95 million asking price was stated. A 1,140-square-foot guest cabin is also included in the transaction, as stated in the Crosby Land Sales listing.

According to the Crosby listing, there was recently a new metal roof installed, Hardie plank siding installed, and heart pine flooring refinished throughout.

The real estate advertisement added, “With a large game room and commercial-grade appliances, it is perfectly suited for entertaining large groups.”

Since Murdaugh kept his sizable gun collection in the game room, it became involved in his trial. The assault rifles and shotguns that were used in the shootings are missing.

The home has a grand staircase, tongue and groove walls, a two-story lobby, a mahogany front door, and a mezzanine balcony. Custom built-ins, crown molding, and mahogany French doors that lead to the back porch are features of the family room.

The advertisement from Crosby Land Co. stated, “This property, with its mix of classic charm and modern amenities, is not just a home but a lifestyle, offering the perfect blend of seclusion, elegance, and convenience.”

The residence is situated in Colleton County’s Islandton.
