FULTON COUNTY – While awaiting trial in Fulton County on felony firearms charges and resisting a police officer, a 22-year-old man is not in jail.

When police arrived in Canton at around 9:30 on Saturday morning to look into a domestic incident involving a man brandishing a gun, Jontin Evans, 22, is said to have fled.

According to a report from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, authorities saw a man who fit Evans’ description sprinting between homes. Evans was being pursued by the police when they claimed to have seen him discard a rucksack that had been discovered on one of the residences’ roofs.

Police claimed to have discovered a stolen weapon inside the backpack. Evans was treated for his wounds at Graham Hospital in Canton before being discharged, according to the authorities, with the assistance of a Canton Police K9.

Although the press release omitted information regarding their statuses, a sheriff’s deputy and a Canton Police officer received medical attention at the hospital as well for injuries.

Evans was taken into custody following an unrelated collision involving a sheriff’s squad car at 5th Avenue and Chestnut Street in Canton, according to the release.

Evans was charged with misdemeanor resisting a peace officer, felonies of possessing a stolen firearm, and aggravated un, authorized use of weapons, and he made his court appearance on Monday.

Evans was freed from jail, according to the sheriff’s office, because his custody was not requested. The state’s attorney decides whether to request pretrial detention. Justin Jochums, the state attorney for Fulton County, was contacted by 25News to provide comments.
