Kentucky Attorney Advocates for 'Sextortion' to be Classified as Criminal Offense

LOUISVILLE, KY: Sara Collins, an attorney, claims that in 2020, her client was fooled into sending a text message containing the password to her Snapchat account. That’s where the offender saw pictures she had taken on vacation with her lover just weeks prior that were deemed sexually obscene. For months after they started, the text messages continued.

Bryan Wilson, a former LMPD officer, entered a guilty plea to federal stalking charges in this case. Court records state that he had threatened to share the pictures with friends, family, and coworkers if the woman hadn’t sent him anymore. “He knew her father, he knew her friends, he knew where she lived, what she did for a living,” Collins stated.

She gave a speech on Wednesday to the Louisville Rotary Club, outlining the laws that she has assisted in writing. Senate Bill 181 would classify sexual extortion as a felony and a criminal offense.

“Not only do we need to raise the awareness that this is wrong and has to be stopped, we’re putting some teeth into it so someone that does this for benefit can be prosecuted,” said Sen. Julie Raque Adams (R-Louisville), the bill’s sponsor, to WLKY.

Collins claims that her then 26-year-old client urged her to draft the law in addition to inspiring her to do so. She hopes the bill passes and that offenders like Bryan Wilson will face more severe penalties.

“Those found guilty of this offense must sign up for the sex offender registry. Their internet access must be restricted once they are released, as stated by Collins.

Wilson was detained by the FBI after being connected to other victims.
