Owner of Multiple NC Businesses in Custody After Special Agent Investigation, Officials Confirm

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, North Carolina: Following an investigation by special agents with the North Carolina Department of Revenue, the owner of multiple businesses in the state was placed under arrest.

Businesswoman Trudi Ann Zangardi, 70, of Moorseville, Mecklenburg County, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with three counts of aiding and abetting the misappropriation of state property.

According to indictments, from January 1, 2020, to March 31, 2022, Zangardi, the only member of The Zan Group, LLC, allegedly helped and encouraged three firms to embezzle, misapply, and convert about $59,742.31 in North Carolina sales tax for its use.

According to the NCDOR, Zangardi was in charge of The Zan Group, LLC dba Lake Norman Cottage, The Zan Group, LLC dba The Cabin, and The Zan Group, LLC dba The Barrel at that time. He had an obligation to gather, retain in trust, and send North Carolina Sales Tax to the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

When Zangardi went before a magistrate in Mecklenburg County, he was given an unsecured bond of $50,000. Special agents from the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division in Raleigh conducted the investigation that led to the accusations against Zangardi.
