A news statement from Macy’s, a business with deep ties to Ohio, stated on Tuesday that it will be closing 150 locations as part of a realignment effort.
To focus investments on the 350 surviving Macy’s stores, the company plans to close 150 “underproductive” locations by 2026. By the end of 2024, it also plans to close 50 stores.
According to a statement from Macy’s CEO Tony Spring, “We are taking the required steps to revitalize relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant assortments, and compelling value.” Spring just took on the position a few weeks ago, but she has nearly 40 years of experience as a Bloomingdale’s executive.
Although Macy’s has closed its stores, Macy’s, Inc. claims that it still plans to add 45 new locations to its Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury brands.
“Our teams are energized by the work ahead as we accelerate our path to market share gains, sustainable, profitable growth, and value creation for our shareholders,” Spring added.
Which 150 stores would close has not yet been disclosed by the corporation.
The former Macy’s headquarters were located in Cincinnati, however, the city has lost several stores.
In February 2020, Macy’s stated that it would be reducing 2,000 corporate jobs and 125 locations over the following three years, marking the company’s most recent big restructuring.
At that time, the company had closed its main store at Fountain Place and its headquarters at 7 W. Seventh Street in downtown Cincinnati. Three years earlier. New York City is now home to Macy’s corporate headquarters.
A few other shop closures in the Greater Cincinnati area occurred in addition to the departure of Macy’s headquarters in February 2020. These closures included the Tri-County Mall site the following year and the Northgate Mall store in January 2020.

Ohio holds a significant position in Macy’s, which acquired family-run businesses in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton.
Known today as Macy’s, Inc., the holding firm Federated Department Stores, Inc. purchased family-owned department stores in Cincinnati and Columbus in 1929.
The merger was composed of Shillito’s, a Cincinnati business started by John Shillito, and F&R Lazarus & Co., a Columbus store started by Simon Lazarus. Federated Department Stores, Inc. was also joined by Rike’s, a department store located in Dayton, in 1959, after some years had passed.
