Florida City Tragedy 1 Killed, 1 Arrested in Crash on Florida's Turnpike

FHP: A fatal collision blocked both lanes of the roadway for around five hours.

Sunshine City, Florida Authorities said Tuesday morning that a man has been taken into custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on Florida City’s Turnpike.

Trooper Damian Avila of the Florida Highway Patrol reports that the collision happened on Monday just after 11:30 p.m. close to Southwest 328th Street.

One car on the highway toppled over onto its roof, as shown in cellphone footage that a viewer shared with Local 10.

On the Turnpike, a black Ford Expedition and a white Honda Accord were traveling south when, for an unexplained cause, the Honda struck the SUV’s rear.

In an email to Local 10 News, Avila stated, “After impact, the Ford Expedition collided with the metal guardrail on the right, then crossed all southbound lanes.” “On the northbound lanes, the Ford Expedition struck the concrete barrier wall. The Ford Expedition’s driver was not using a seatbelt.

According to Avila, the Expedition’s driver was declared deceased at the site. He claimed that the Honda’s driver fled on foot but was apprehended soon after.

Avila reports that the Turnpike’s northbound and southbound lanes were blocked for around five hours while detectives looked into what may have caused the incident.

Since then, all lanes have reopened. The victim’s and suspect’s identities are still under wraps.
